Is The Div Tag Causing You Woes?

May 14th, 2009 Deborah

Well, there is absolutely no need for that to be the case!

When first learning how to code a web page, there tends to be some confusion about the div tag with regard to what it is, where to apply it, and how to make it work. And frankly, I’ve seen more than a few professionally developed web site where div tags were not performing up to their full potential. Translation: ooops!

If you’ve not taken my introductory coding course here at LVS, you, too, may have experienced a hiccup or two when applying a div tag.

If that sounds like something you’d be interested in finding out more about, I’ve put together a quick and simple tutorial that may help clarify that pesky div tag issue you’re having. Your world will be a better place to live once you learn how to "divide and conquer" your web pages.

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment either here or on the article page.

Thanks!

New Page Added

April 23rd, 2009 Deborah

Deb just added a new Page to the LVS Build Your Web Site I blog. Whoa! It seems I can either teach it or I can blog about it; the two don’t appear to be concurrent activities. So, with the March session about to come to an end here at LVS, I thought I’d grab the opportunity to put together a short article.

When first learning how to code a web page, there tends to be some confusion about the use of a class, as in, where to apply it, when to use it, and how a class differs from a selector.

If you’ve not taken my introductory coding course here at LVS, you, too, may have a question about the difference between a selector and a class.

To that end, I’ve put together a quick tutorial that may help clarify that for you and help you to "class up" your web page.

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment.

Thanks!

Web Site Coding Class

Of course, all the LVS classes are fun-filled and jam-packed with information you can’t live without BUT none of them offers the opportunity to learn the basics of web site coding like Build Your Web Site I.

What’s that you say? You already know all about creating web pages? Then there is a good chance my class isn’t for you. But before you make up your mind on that issue, why not run your site through the W3C validation services; if it comes back clean, kudos to you and please enjoy one of the many other courses LVS offers. If, on the other hand, it doesn’t, well — the link for information about the Build1 course is right above this paragraph.

How about those of you who don’t know what X/HTML and CSS even means? You are the people for whom this course was specifically developed. You don’t NEED to know specifics. I’ve designed the Level I course in such a way that it introduces basic coding concepts by discussion and example. Each lesson builds on the previous one so what you learn in Lesson 1 will be used consistently throughout the rest of the lessons, as well as in all the Build Series classes, thus affording you the opportunity to become comfortable with the coding experience as you learn new material by virtue of repetition.

Is It Technical?

There are technical terms involved, certainly. Everything new to one’s learning experience involves its own terminology - it’s how we’re able to communicate with each other. Having said that, the material is presented in an easy to read, casual manner. A former student commented she was afraid the lessons would be like having to “read some geek manual”. Instead, she went on to say, they were more along the lines of a friend talking to her. That’s what I was going for!

Over the past several years of teaching at LVS, I’ve had a number of students proclaim they were nervous, doubtful, and even intimidated by the prospect of learning web site coding. Yet, they signed up for Build Your Website - Intro course. Congratulations to them and to their ultimate accomplishments because those folks have web sites today.

Still Not Sure?

I encourage you to browse through what former students have said about the Build Your Website I course.

So whether you are a complete novice or you have worked with web sites in the past, this course offers something for everyone.

With that said, I’ll ’see’ you in the halls!

THE Web Coding Class To Take

Of course, all the LVS classes are fun-filled and jam-packed with information you can’t live without BUT none of them offers the opportunity to learn the basics of website coding like Build Your Web Site I.

Of course, I’m more than a bit biased because Build1 is my course. I authored the material and I teach it - that makes it very personal to me. As such, I make every effort to pass my enthusiasm along to students.

If you’ve ever looked at a web site on the internet, wondered how it was developed and, for a fleeting moment, considered creating a web site of your own, you had a touch of inspiration. Chances are, though, that thought was followed by, "I can’t do that". If you’ve convinced yourself you don’t have the skills to publish a web site, I’m not going to argue with you. After all, you’ve already talked yourself into not being able to do it.

Now if on the other hand, there is even a smidgen of doubt, you’ve come to the right place.

Over the past several years of teaching at LVS, I’ve had a number of students proclaim they were nervous, doubtful, and even intimidated by the prospect of learning web site coding. Yet, they signed up for Build Your Web Site - Intro course. Kudos to them and to their ultimate accomplishments because those folks have web sites today.

You see, it’s all a mindset. And the lessons play a large part as well!

I’ve designed the Level I course in such a way that it introduces basic coding concepts by discussion and example. Each lesson builds on the previous one so what you learn in Lesson 1 will be used consistently throughout the rest of the lessons, as well as in all the Build Series classes, thus affording you the opportunity to become comfortable, by virtue of repetition, with the coding experience as you learn new material.

The material, although somewhat technical in nature, is presented in an easy to read, casual manner. A former student commented she was afraid the lessons would be like having to “read some geek manual”. Instead, she went on to say, they were more along the lines of a friend talking to her. Ah, mission accomplished!

And should you “hiccup” during any part of the lessons, I’m there to help. Students are assigned to a class message board on which they post assignments and ask questions. You are never left to your own devices; there is no need to research any outside resources to complete an assignment nor are you left stranded without guidance.

For those individuals with previous coding experience, this class is of benefit as well. I’ve had student after student tell me they didn’t realize to what extent standards compliant X/HTML coding and CSS had developed since they learned to code.

So, whether you are someone who doesn’t know what X/HTML & CSS means or have prior coding experience, if you want to meet other exceptional people who registered for the Build1 Intro course while having fun, I’ll “see” you in class.

What’s In A Name?

August 13th, 2008 Deborah

"A rose by any other name is still", um, not a good web page file name. That may be my last attempt at a literary reference…

If you’re fairly new to web site construction, it’s entirely possible you have questions about how to effectively name your files. I can help with that! If you’re not new to coding, you probably wouldn’t want to go back and rename each and every file you already have published. At the same time, the present is always a good place to begin refining how you do things.

To that end, I’ve written a short article on the standardized, best practice naming convention as used by the greater majority of today’s web site developers.

Enjoy!

Is There A Difference Between .htm and .html?

August 6th, 2008 Deborah

You’ve all seen web site pages that end in an alphabet soup of extensions — .htm, .html, .shtml, .asp, .php, and so forth. The extensions that are most commonly seen are .htm and .html.

So what is the difference? Is there a difference? Do you care? Of course you care or you wouldn’t have read past the subject line. [wink]

For the answer to this mystery, I invite you to visit .htm Versus .html.

Using An Index Page

July 31st, 2008 Deborah

Have you ever wondered why, on some web sites, the address ends in “index.html”? It’s because an index.html is the first, or home, page of that web site.

If you’re unsure about what an index page is, how to use one, or what to put on it, I invite you to read this brief article about an index page.
