Piano Lessons – 2 Tips

August 21st, 2010 Brian

Piano Lessons: Scales
Play the scale of B major (starting on middle B) with your right hand for one octave ascending and descending singing ‘la’ on each note. Play each note for the duration of a minim or 2 counts. Playing this scale gives you a feel for the keyboard and helps you keep a natural hand position.

Piano Lessons: Broken Chords
With the sustain pedal depressed firmly with your right heel on the floor, play the broken chords of C, F and G major over four octaves ascending alternating the hands i.e LH RH LH RH folowed by the root note of each chord played with the 2nd finger of your left hand, i.e. above the last broken chord played by the right hand. After pausing at the top, play the same passage descending. Play each chord in root position i.e. left hand finger is 5 3 1 and right hand fingering is 1 3 5 ascending. Descending the left hand fingering 1 3 5 and right hand fingering is 5 3 1. A suggested metronome speed for this exercise is 120 beats per minute, playing each note on each beat.
