[...] Anita’s and my discussion about how this PHP course is different and also register via this blog post on the new MySQL/PHP [...]

I was looking at the classes and trying to figure out what became of php 101. If I took that it sounds like the new php would still be very worth taking, correct?
Anita
Yep, we have updated the course to make it even more relevent. Instead of focusing on things like file loading, we are looking at random image generators, displaying database information, games and very powerful forms. Since I don’t know when we will have someone to teach a blog theme class, I am taking another look at the lessons here to make sure that the skills needed on the coding side of the theme are all covered in this course. Once I am confident on that, I was going to cross-post an announcement about this class on the blogging blog.
Excellent! I’ll plan on taking it next term. I signed up for ASP this term and I think one challenging class at a time is enough
Even after taking the php class, those themes are confusing stuff.
Anita
That was because the former version of the PHP class focused on a different skill set. This course is much more directed to working with loops and includes to make your site dynamic, adding database connections AND we are working a lot with modularized code. Those are also the building blocks of the WordPress so it will be much easier to apply those PHP skills to WordPress.
Okay, I couldn’t stand waiting and just signed up for this one too!
Anita
Hi Bean,
I just found this post. I am signed up for your Blogging class AGAIN because I didn’t really do all I wanted to and have more questions and know I will get a lot out of it. As soon as I saw that I will learn how to change my theme I got excited. But I am also afraid of getting in over my head with trying to do too much. It probably isn’t fair to ask but I will anyway – do you have any suggestions about this? Should I wait and take this PHP course after I get further along with the blogging? I don’t want to be a total poop in both courses. – Adele
Adele,
It is really going to boil down to your time availability. Since you are retaking the blogging class, it should be slightly less time intensive.
Jer and I have totally rewritten this PHP course so we are making educated estimates on the time students will need. The lessons are longer but we think much easier to understand now. I know that you have really been wanting to work on theme customization for your blog. This course will provide you with the PHP that you need to make it possible but won’t address the graphic issues. Knowing how much time you spent in the blog class tweaking themes, taking this course might actually save you some time.
I dropped out of PHP because I had such a difficult time with it. I have taken several programming courses at LVS and each time I drop out by the 3rd to 4th week. I just can’t get my head wrapped around it! And I feel so stupid that I can’t even ask questions, I just drop out. I’ve taken LVS’s XHTML classes, and I loved them! I am not blaming the instructors because I don’t give them a chance to help me, I just drop out. I looked at the topics for this class and already I am breaking into a sweat. Conditional Statements, loops, includes, syntax, aiiiieeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am trying to talk a friend of mine into taking the class and hopefully get him to tutor me and hold my hand. I’d love to take this course, but I am ascared!!!!
We are working really hard to make the lessons easier to understand, especially for those that are less “geeky”. Taking a class with a friend can be a great idea. You have extra support and some else to bounce ideas off of. Jeramie is a pretty approachable guy and really likes to help those that want to learn. I stick my head into that class a fairly regular basis as well. So, I hope that you are up to giving it a whirl!
Jeramie is a nice guy and a good instructor, it was just me. Maybe I’ll get my courage up and try it again next semester. Thanks, Bean.
