So stuffy….

Oh my.  I am just so stuffy today.  I am sure it’s allergy related but it still doesn’t help me feel better.  I am taking my medications, like a good patient, lol.  I’m drinking a lot of hot tea to help and making sure I get plenty of fluids.  It seems like warm compresses help me too so I’ve been doing that off an on as well.

I have thought about trying the nasal irrigation and have tried it a few times but haven’t really had a lot of success with that.  I have when I wen tto the doctor’s and had it performed but the ones I’ve tried at home haven’t really worked.

Dental health…

Recently my eight year old had a horrible battle with a tooth. Thankfully, we were able to get the tooth removed after many visits with various dentists and finally found a fabulous oral surgeon who removed the tooth, cleaned the area, and put her out. We were thrilled to have found him!
Because of our recent dental experience, I am even more adamant about the kids practicing excellent dental hygiene. Here are a few things I have found to be helpful in our house…
1. Use a timer. This ensures the kids are brushing their teeth for the correct amount of time.
2. Use the dental flossers that have handles. My kids seem to really use these a lot more.
3. Electric toothbrushes. It seems they are more eager to brush when they have an electric toothbrush.

So do you have any tips to share?

Thermometers, tissues, bleach, and alcohol

You may be wondering WHAT in the world all of these things are doing in my title.  Well, this is what I have been surrounding myself with for at least the past 24 hours.  With the flu being around my house, I have been going non stop.  I am just really hoping that I somehow manage to avoid the dreaded flu this season.  The kids have really been going through a rough time but hopefully they are on the mend.

Summer vacations…

Are you planning on a family vacation this year?  We are thinking about taking a few smaller trips.  With three kids, it can be a challenge to first pick a destination, second, pack and get ready, and third have a good time, lol.

I always try to make sure I also pack a first aid kit, complete with any extras that we might need such as junior ibuprofen.  Here are  a few things that I have in ours.

Band Aids of many sizes

Antibiotic ointment

Medical tape

Various gauzes, like 2 x 2’s

Tweezers

Sting relief pads

Alcohol pads

Gloves

Ibuprofen, Adult and Junior

Acetaminophen

What about you?  What do you have in your first aid kit?

Sun and Soccer

We are a soccer family.  All three of my children play and my husband and I both coach.  It keeps us busy and it’s great exercise, all rolled up in one.

We spend many weekends outside as a family with several games a weekend.  Add the cook outs, parties, swimming, and park trips and it ends up being a lot of time in the great outdoors.

I wanted to post a reminder to everyone to wear sunblock.

  • Apply the sunscreen at least thirty, 30, minutes before you will be out in the sun.
  • Reapply after strenuous exercise or swimming.
  • Make sure you apply enough–at least an ounce.
  • Be sure to apply it everywhere…arms, legs, face, neck, ears…everywhere.  I have forgotten to apply it at times to the tops of my feet and ended up with my shoe design for a bit.
  • Wear a higher SPF.  I personally wear a 50 SPF when out in the sun and I also wear a 30 SPF daily-year round.
  • Remember to protect your mouth with a sunscreen as well.  There is nothing worse than sunburned lips…ouch!

Enjoy your weekend!

Allergies…

Allergies. Spring.  It’s that time of year when we are sniffling, congested, and have a tissue in our hand or pocket at all times.  And of course I can’t forget the watery and itchy eyes, the coughing, and fatigue that seems to go along with it!

Symptoms of seasonal allergies include:

  • Itchy and watery eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sinus congestion
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Itchy throat

Treatment for allergies may include:

  • Avoid the allergen.  I know—this is easier said than done.
  • Saline rinse for the nose and sinus cavities.  You can use a neti pot if you’d like.
  • Over the counter anti-histamines.
  • Prescription medications.
  • Nose sprays.

A reminder—always read and follow the directions on all medications—prescription AND over the counter.

Happy Spring!!
