Recently, my sister in law finished her battle with cancer. She was such a beautiful person. Her battle hit all who knew and loved her with how precious time truly is.
We are in the grieving process and it is more difficult when you watch your kids go through that process. Has anyone here had an experience with this and how did you cope/deal with it?

Where has the summer went?
I can’t believe that summer has went by so quickly! Schools will be starting up again very soon, which means that as a school nurse I will be headed back as well.
I am a mom of three kids and will have huge lists of supplies soon. I have found that for me making lists really helps keep me organized and the stress levels down.
I also bought a really big family calendar that I hung up by the coat racks. Hopefully, this too will help.

Kids on summer vacation
As a mom of three kids who are now on summer vacation, it seems I am always trying to remain calm. To be a referee. To just keep my sanity.
Today was unusually crazy with the kids bickering. My youngest who rarely is grounded or punished spent the day grounded with no computer or going outside, which was torture for her, lol.
I have to say though—not sure if it was harder for her or for me! I am just hoping that tomorrow is a better day.

Healthy Blood Pressure
Here are a few ways to have a healthy blood pressure.
1. Exercise. Exercise for 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times per week.
Believe me, this is an area where I am really lacking. I am trying to get with the program but I really have to force myself. I know that some say they LOVE to exercise. I unfortunately am not one of those people.
2. Low sodium diet. The Cleveland Clinic recommends under 2,000 mg of sodium per day.
3. Drink plenty of water, 6 to 8 glasses per day, with each glass being approximately 8 ounces.
4. And as with everything else—have a balanced diet. Again–this is easier said than done for me.
Do you have any tips or suggestions to share? I’d love to read your ideas.

Hypertension, High Blood Pressure, The Silent Killer
Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Blood pressure is defined as the force of our blood pushing against the walls of the arteries and vessels as the heart pumps out blood through out the body.
High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because there are little to no symptoms. It is usually detected when we go in for our routine physicals.
As I mentioned in a previous post, blood pressure is defined as high when it reaches 140/90. Our goal should be to keep the blood pressure below this, closer to 120/80.
When blood pressure becomes high, there can be damage and complications that arise from it. Here are just a few of the potential health problems:
Kidney damage
Heart Attack
Stroke
Vision problems
In the following posts, I will review a few steps towards maintaining or having a healthy blood pressure.

How do you take care of yourself?
I’m a mom of three, ages 16 (soon to be 17), 14, and almost 10. I am a nurse who works full time as a high school nurse. I also teach part time, various topics such as Understanding Medical Terminology. I’m also involved in several of my kids activities, such as sports, church groups, etc.
I know I need to take care of myself, but it seems there is always something else to do.
How do you find time for yourself?

Sun!
We spent a sun filled week-end with soccer. All three of my kids play and we were outside for so much of the time.
Thankfully, I remembered to apply sunblock on myself and the kids. AND I remembered to reapply it, which is something that I tend to forget.
What about you? Do you find that you forget to reapply sunblock? What SPF do you typically use?

How much is too much?
Do you ever think it’s possible to allow your kids to do too much? It seems that as parents we go from one activity to another, without much time to breathe and relax. Do you think that it’s possible to have our children over booked? And if so, what type of results do you believe happen from this? Do you think that it increases the stress level and increased discipline problems?
I’d love to know your thoughts on this.
