Were they ever showing? Most modules are positioned by default in the left column - did you change the position to where you want them to be? I assume you enabled the individual modules. Of course whilst developing you won't have cache turned on and I am sure you know also to clear your browser cache. Those filters in the backend you refer to are just a tool to make finding things easier - they are not a setting and have no effect on the front end view. If you have filters on the front end eg in a section or category view, those filters are for your visitors and have no effect on the site development. Changing your Admin login would have no effect either. Remember also that there often is more than one page of modules in Module Manager and the same goes for Plugins in the Plugin Manager.
