Hillary’s Home in Hawaii

May 9th, 2009 Hillary

Just a quick update to let y’all know that, after a short visit to my son in Palm Desert, CA (who has wonderful lemon and grapefruit trees), I am finally back where I belong, on the beach on the island of Oahu.  I can go to sleep listening to the waves and feel the soft trade winds, scented with the fragrance of a multitude of tropical floral scents.  This is truly paradise!

Along with all this, I am blessed with three great-grandchildren I can now begin “bonding” with, as well as the company of my talented nurse/pilot daughter, who is an artist, sings and plays beautiful guitar.  I would be remiss in not mentioning my dear ex-SIL who worked so hard to prepare a place for me.  Both he and my grandson did a wonderful job painting my room while my daughter worked diligently unpacking boxes.

Though I’m not completely settled in, I hope to be able to spend more time blogging, as well as teaching at LVS.

Just sign me,
“A Grateful Mom on Mother’s Day”

Inspiration — My Story!

February 6th, 2009 Hillary

INSPIRATION…where do I begin — obviously at the beginning!
As a child, I loved to doodle and even had a grandmother who was quite proficient in oil painting.  But did she ever do ANYTHING to inspire me, by example, help, or encouragement.  Nope!  As I recall, no one even suggested that I might have talent.

I decided to major in Art at the University of Oklahoma  only because it didn’t require a math prerequisite (and I knew that math was NOT my forte).  It seemed that my best assignments were those that I did in a hurry and just before the deadline.  I actually spent more time at the School of Architecture than the Art School.  Unfortunately, my “formal” education was aborted when it was discovered that my Mother had cancer, so my education went “bye-bye”.

It wasn’t until the early 60’s when I attended an art class held in a small studio.  I only went to keep a girlfriend company and had no intention to even try.  Until then I’d been buying prints and painting Elmers Glue over them for brush strokes.  At that time the small class only cost $5.00, plus the price of a canvas.  I was encouraged to try by the sweet, dear woman who owned the studio.  Her name was Florette and her husband did the framing.  Our assignment was to do a still life of a wine bottle, apple and wine glass.  Florette told us how to sketch in charcoal, blow away the dust, paint over the charcoal strokes with gold ochre thinned oils (making corrections if needed), and voila, I had a painting done in two hours.  Florette kept walking around, encouraging us, helping when necessary, and our merry little band of about 8 students always knew that, no matter how badly we did, “Florette could fix it”.  Just a stroke here and there would get us on the right track.

I carried that finished oil home that night and carried it with me all around the house, totally disbelieving that I had created something I was proud of.  To this day, that painting is my daughter’s favorite and one that I would never part with.

Florette was European, trained abroad and she tirelessly hand-painted fine china at an early age, using just the primary colors of red, blue and yellow.  She was patient, encouraging, witty and wonderful. I ended up spending hours a day in the studio, watching, studying, painting.  It seemed that I tried painting anything and everything.  Each time one of us would win a contest, we’d paint, drink wine and eat cheese and fruit.  Yup, that’s why I try to make my paintings loose.  (It’s also why I serve my students my special, magical and mystical Fermented Coconut Milk and give them leis when they show they are trying — yup, it’s bribery, but what the heck, they love it.)

Due to a cruel twist of fate, Florette and her husband (who was a private pilot) flew into the side of a mountain and were killed instantly.  Needless to say, I was devastated and grieved for what seemed a very long time.  Then, I once again had to tackle painting without MY Florette.  Somehow I felt her presence, as though she was there and critiquing me while encouraging me to try, try, and try some more.  Always, in the back of my mind was “Florette can fix it”…but there was no longer a physical Florette — just the spirit she instilled in me.

I’ve painted everything from the inside stall door of a ladies’ bathroom at a saloon in Arizona, to the insides of oyster shells, to portraits of celebrities.  I’ve painted on rocks, seashells, wood, canvas, plates, glasses, cloth, cars and walls.  Those are all I can think of at the moment.

Let’s skip forward 40+ years and here I am, instructing at LVS. Vikki, our Administrator, has become my business “Florette”…helping, encouraging, and allowing me freedom to teach and share my knowledge with my students.  So, now I have yet another person who has inspired me.  We can count friends and family — even online firends — (but they’re biased).  It’s still that small voice inside me that says “Hillary, you can do it” (which seems to be coming from Florette) when I have to critique my students.

When all else fails, my love of music has inspired me more than anything.  I can reach deep into my soul and envision beauty which demands to be seen on canvas — yet, my need to share my knowledge with my students prevents me from selfishly pursuing my own desires, at least for now.  If I can instill just a small glimmer of hope and enlightenment to a student in order to help him or her with pursuing the arts, then I will have fulfilled my reason for being here.

There you have it!  My secret is that little Angel named “Florette”, who whispers in my ear that I can do it and INSPIRES me to do the best I can with what I have.

Hillary :)
P.S.  Have I told you lately that I’m not perfect, but certainly inspired — and pray that I can be an inspiration to others.

Attention all you Artistes! New Semester Almost Amongst Us!

October 26th, 2008 Hillary

Hiya Gang!

The classrooms at LVS open on Monday, October 27. Registration closes the following Wednesday, October 29 and the first lesson will be posted on Saturday, November 1.

As you know, this blog pertains to all three of my Digital Art Classes, so I encourage you to take the next subsequent course, i.e., if you’ve completed Digital Art, then the next class would be Beyond The Basics and lastly the never-ending, ongoing Digital Artists Studio, which changes assignments each and every semester.

If you’re looking for a new graphics program, I encourage you to give PhotoImpactX3 a try.  I just taught my first class, Introduction to PhotoImpact X3 and we had a marvelous time.  It’s a powerful, yet very user-friendly program and has impressed both beginners, as well as photography experts in its features.  Even a “granny” like me can push a couple of buttons and have a framed snapshot off and into an email to all her friends.  So, please check out the program and its features.  As usual, LVS offers a discount on the PhotoImpact software (which comes bundled with Corel’s Media One and Painter Essentials3 — all for less than $100!

Looking forward to seeing you!
Hillary

A Shameless Plug!

August 1st, 2008 Hillary

I must tell you that one of my fellow instructors/friend at LVS was kind enough to snail mail me two CDs that her husband, Michael, had recorded! Since I’m an incurable romantic and music is my weakness (if you’ve ever visited my website), I was not only touched by their generosity, but by the beautiful voice and talent of Michael Moore-Kelly.

I know that this has nothing whatsoever to do with LVS or “art” (or does it?) but I wanted to let you folks know that it’s worth a visit to his website and give a listen to his sampling of the CD “Especially for You” which he recorded TOTALLY DIGITALLY, so it ain’t no real live orchestra behind him, other than his genius and knowledge of all those fancy recording gizmos.

There are short samples in MP3 format (which are just teasers) and I’m just so happy to have the full length versions! The small amount he’s charging is well worth it, and you can use PayPal.

If you’re lucky enough to live in or around the Ft. Meyers, Cape Coral area, his schedule is listed, along with pics, etc. If you’re lucky enough to see him perform, be sure to tell him “Hillary sends her alohas” and I’ll bet he’ll play your favorite song!

Mahalo nui loa (thanks so much) Elaina and Michael,
:) Hillary

September Registration is now open at LVS Online Classes!

July 28th, 2008 Hillary

I hope you all had a great summer vacation and got lots of rest! Yup, it’s THAT time again…

Classrooms will open on Aug. 25, 2008.
Registration ends on Aug. 27, 2008.
The first lesson will post on Aug. 30, 2008.

These are the courses I’ll be teaching:
Digital Art
This course introduces the basics of digital drawing and the principles of art in general which are applicable for any graphics program as well as RL (real life) artistic endeavors.. Any graphics program that has brushes which can be used for blending and retouching will work for this course.

Digital Art, Beyond the Basics
n this course, we will explore beyond the basics of digital drawing and painting, and helping you to find the digital medium you are comfortable with while challenging you to paint in mediums you are not. Focus will be on drawing and painting from scratch using brushes and retouch tools in your graphic software program including but not limited to Photo Impact, Painter, Paintshop Pro, and Photoshop, though you will be encouraged to practice concepts on a sketchpad, as well.

Digital Artist’s Studio
A “virtual art studio” which will offer a pot pourri of subject matter and a new and different assignment each week, varying from semester to semester — so it’s an ongoing, never-ending fun experience. You’ll be encouraged to submit your own ideas as well as those of your humble instructor, moi! I’ve come up with some imaginative assignments and approaches, which vary from semi-nude to cartoons! The sky’s the limit (in fact one assignment was about akies…LOL). It does require that you have completed both the Digital Art and Beyond the Basics class so you will be confident in your ability to express yourself artistically and have fun at the same time!

TWO NEW COURSES:
PhotoImpact X3 Intro
This is a great introductory course covering the wonderful possibilities of PhotoImpact X3 (now owned by Corel) for both graphic artists, photographers, as well as those who want just a good photo-sharing program. It’s bundled with Corel’s Media One as well as Painter Essentials 3 and LVS offers a discount on this great program. An Overview can be found here: Corel’s PhotoImpact X3 I’ve used PI since Version 4.0 and beta tested it for a couple of versions, so I’m very prejudiced in favor of it. It’s powerful, inexpensive and user-friendly! There are lots of exercises and assignments, so you’ll get very familiar with the tools, menu commands and image editing tasks.

Astrological Card Reading
I know…you’re asking how I found time to learn about astrology. It’s because I think there are 48 hours in every day. I was a professional astrologer for many years and also taught astrology while living in Los Angeles. I learned a wonderful technique and want to share it with those of you who are interested in the “art” of reading cards for yourselves and others. You need no previous experience or knowledge of Astrology as I will give you all the tools and information necessary. Actually, the only “tools” you’ll need will be a deck of regular playing cards with two jokers. BTW, skeptics are more than welcome to take this class — I relish the opportunity take on challengers!

Sorry that this has been such a long post — but I wanted to let you know that we are offering a lot of new classes at LVS, as well as mine, so please drop by LVS just to see what a wonderful variety of courses we can offer you. Remember, our motto is “LVS – Where Learning is Fun” and I do my best to see that you do!!!

:) Hillary

Exciting News coming in the Fall!

July 28th, 2008 Hillary

LVS is offering new courses so you must stop by www.lvsonline.com! One of the new courses will be Pixel Art. I haven’t gotten to try anything as I’m still a mad artist and I know that it is very time-consuming.

Speaking of time-consuming, I’ve just finished the course on Astrological Card Reading.

Whewww, I’ve Finished Writing Two New Courses!

July 26th, 2008 Hillary

Just to let you all know that it’s been a busy summer for me as I will be teaching two new courses at LVS: Introduction to PhotoImpact X3 and Astrological Card Reading. Similarity? I think NOT! I will probably have a blog for the course(s) separate from this one, but you “artistes” out there who deal with right-brain activities might be interested.

Astrological Card Reading is a fun and informative way to read cards using a plain deck of cards and, for some reason, “it WORKS”!

I’ve found that Corel’s PhotoImpact gives the best “bang for the buck” (and LVS gives a discount on the software). I used PI exclusively for my digital art and still use it when I nab a student’s painting to add a tetch of this or that to illustrate more clearly my critique. It’s less than $100 and also is bundled with Corel’s Media One and Painter Essentials 3 (a light version of Painter). Professional photographers will love it for the ease of use in “tweaking” their photographic masterpieces.

Course Descriptions can be found here:

Humbly yours,
Hillary
