Blog Carnival: If I knew then…

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

If I knew then, what I know now… is the topic for the next Blog Carnival for LVS students, staff and alumni.

How many times have you said “If I knew then, what I know now…”?

What have you learned that has made your life so much easier, more efficient, more fun or more fulfilling?  What do you want to tell the world about, so they can avoid some of the frustrations or heartbreak that you have endured?  Please share your wisdom and inspiration with us!

How it works

  1. Publish your art and/or writing to your blog or web site.
  2. Go to http://blogcarnival.com/bc/submit_6139.html and submit the URL of your work by April 8, 2009. In the remarks section, please indicate if you are a LVS student, alumni or staff. It is also a great place to summarize your post. You can type in a sentence or two to introduce your post or I can write the introduction for you.
  3. On April 10, a list of all the submissions will appear here with a brief a description.
  4. Check out the informative and entertaining art and stories of fellow LVS Staff, Students and Alumni  that will be posted here.
  5. Post a link or story on your own blog or website about the carnival, letting your readers know about your participation. This will allow them to peruse the carnival submissions and visit the blogs and web sites of your fellow participants. It is a great way to be discovered!

Tot get a better sense of how it all works, check out last session’s blog carnival entries on Inspiration.

I am really looking forward to seeing your submissions!

By duty or design, how does inspiration strike you? This is the question Val addresses in her post on how inspiration personally evolves for her.

I’m even doing destination weddings now!”

What do you want to make today?

Many Creative Gifts presents Ain’t He Cute?! posted at Many Creative Gifts — “be thoughtful”, saying, “Not an article — just a picture of a cute crocheted axolotl that I created in response to a request. But, I hope it will inspire others to explore their creative possibilities.”

This is a late addition to the carnival but I included it because Ellen share lots of her tips for finding inspiration for art.

Kat’s second post talks about how Flash has inspired her and her students.

Kat presents Flash Inspirations posted at Flash Classes @ LVS Online, saying, “We teach what we teach because we enjoy the topic we are instructing and enjoy sharing our knowledge. Our real reward comes from our students journey in learning and the appreciation that is shown on completion.”

Blogging Basics: Intro to Blogging class

Learn the blogging basics or step up and discover the benefits of the blogosphere in the new blogging classes at LVS Online. Bean has modified her popular Blogging for Fun, Fame and Fortune classes into two distinct offerings. The first course Blogging Basics, covers the nuts and bolts of blogging. It is designed as an introductory blogging course and is suited for personal and professional blogs.  We be using the WordPress blogging platform for our examples and demos, but other platforms will be mentioned.

Blogging for Fun, Fame and Fortune: Promote your blog

The second course, the revised Blogging for Fun, Fame and Fortune class will function as more of a blogging studio and is in response to students requesting a “lifetime membership”.  Although it is really easy to start blogging, once you begin you can see how how multi-faceted it is. You can take your blog in many differnt directions or choose from a wide assortment of goals. You can evolve and refine your blog posts from good to compelling.  You can gain an appeciative audience as you gain authority. You gain authority from participation. Although the core context of the course will remain the same from session, each session the students will have the opportunity to make choices about what type of template modification we will tackle or which social networking site we want to explore in detail. In November session we might devote time and attention to Blog Catalog and changing CSS styles in our templates. In January, we might focus on Weblog and modifying what appears with each post on our home page.

Blogger’s Studio to build content and community for you blog

This Blogging for Fun, Fame and Fortune class is designed for those that really want to promote their Word Press blog for professional gain or personal satisfaction. Students can take it once or sign up repeatedly for their “lifetime membership”. Students will learn from the lessons, instructor examples and more importantly from each other as they support and offer each other feedback and information.

Customize your WP theme? Take PHP 101 for Web Developers

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Many of you have asked for a class on how to customize your WordPress theme. Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time to write and teach another course right now. I did spend a chunk of my summer helping Jeramie rewrite the PHP 101 class. We have totally redesigned it so it truly has a web developer focus versus a generic programming focus. In addition, I have made sure that we address all of the basic skills that you would need to customize the code of your WordPress theme. Want to change how your posts are displayed? How about making sure the author’s nickname always appears on the post? Or maybe you want to make sure that your comments have gravatars and that your readers can subscribe to the comment feed? No problem! Those are just a sample of the things that you can do with your theme once you understand PHP.

You can read more about the course, Anita’s and my discussion about how this PHP course is different and also register via this blog post on the new MySQL/PHP blog.
