I am presently involved in 2 non-profit causes (one dedicated to educating girls in Damongo, Africa, and one (under construction) dedicated to weighing the issues involved in moving Lucy (an Asian elephant at our zoo) to an elephant sanctuary). I am really looking forward to learning everything that Mark has to offer in the areas of social networking; and perhaps I will gain more enthusiasm toward utilizing tools such as Twitter and Facebook.
Sandy,
Thanks for chiming in. Can you post your links? Carter might want to take a peek. He is a non-profit pro and I am hoping he will include some gems for non-profits in his lessons
Thank you Bean and Carter … Here are the links to my two non-profit websites:

I’m also feeling very lonely on:
http://twitter.com/LucyTheElephant (only 2 friends)
and

I’m hoping to learn more about strategies to increase followers.
Thanks and warm wishes to all.

Thanks for the post Sandy!
I’d love to learn more about the non-profits you’re involved with–can you post the links (great idea Bean)?

Hello Sandy,
I’m following you now on Twitter (http://www.Twitter.com/mjcarter) and my second class will be talking about building your Twitter following–great timing!
Also:
I noticed your Facebook page. This is actually in my first lesson: Facebook only “allows” real people (i.e. with birth certificates) to have Facebook accounts.
While you might never have a problem, if Facebook somehow comes across the account of a fictional character they can shut it down instantly; you would lose everything.
You would need to set up a “page” for the cause and let people become “fans”.
Again–it’s all in the lesson but I wanted to give you a heads up before you put any more work into that Facebook profile.

Thanks so much, Carter. I am really looking forward to your lessons and I am trying like mad to find some time to go through your ‘other’ online material. I will make necessary changes after I read your lesson.

I have been trying to promote my business online via my blog (main one on blogger currently- since it is set up and somewhat established- the other I need to work on more before putting it out there)
I have tons of questions and I am hoping that at the end of this class I can make more sense of:
Twitter, HOW to use it & how to use it effectively.
Technocrati, I just received an e-mail from them- have been signed up for ages yet I have no idea, really what for- have links on my blog yet have never quite figured out what purpose they serve (same with digg & stumbleupon)
Facebook, How to create a fan page, and promote it & I’d like to learn if there is a way to automatically update facebook, & everything else all at once when I update my blog or blogs. Currently all of this seems very redundant to me. There must be an easier way, and since my business is NOT blogging, (I am supposed to be making things- that’s what I’m promoting) I need to spend less time on the computer!
And on feedburner, why does it ask if I want to burn a feed? What does that do?I thought a feed happened automatically when someone clicked on the rss symbol?
Sorry if this is a lot- I do look forward to understanding the whole thing better at the end of this class.
Great questions Carla,
We answers to some of those questions in the class Wiki and we will be addressing others this session. I didn’t schedule any specific content on RSS feeds this session. That would be a good idea for next session.
When you are clicking that RSS button you are subscribing to a created feed. Burning refers to creating that feed.
Hello Carla,
Great questions! We’ll be looking at Facebook pages and groups (along with how to set them up, what to do and what not to do) in the first of my two lessons.
The “how to” for Twitter comes after that.
Both lessons will include specific ways to build word of mouth marketing using those platforms.
Looking forward to talking more!
Carter

This sounds interesting, but what makes this presenter an expert?
What college did he go to and what social media or marketing success stories can he share — Big financial wins are most important.
We see so many people putting up a shingle and calling themselves experts. “Been there done that” is nice, but sounds like fluff from someone that doesn’t have any real qualifications.
I’d like to hear more.
Great questions Heather. You are right, there are a lot of “social media gurus” out there who really don’t know much more than the fact that they want to ride on the coat tails of whatever is hot.
I will be honest in stating that I don’t know what Carter’s formal education is. Mine is in nursing, psychology and biology, there aren’t a lot of formal college level programs available yet, albeit the University of Washington does have one now.
I invited Carter to help me teach this session because I know Carter can get things done. I have friends and colleagues that have involved Carter in a number of projects, especially for non-profits. In the mini project that I worked on with Carter, he took the lead and proposed realistic strategies that won the approval of the client.
I will ask Carter to share a story here, but he will be doing that in much more detail in the course.
Hello Heather,
I agree completely about the “social media expert” tag. My education (formal) was 10 years ago (marketing) in college.
More importantly lately it’s been solid results, I founded http://www.NetworkingForACause.org and http://www.nyea.org along with my latest company http://www.TweetNetworking.com and we’ve grown the organizations as well as clients, seminars and events in multiple states (New York is next).
I’ve run social media campaigns for http://www.SavingTheWorld.net and http://www.SpeedNetworking.com also.
Feel free to email me mjcarter (at) TweetNetworking.com with any other questions!

So where did you go to school?
Hello Heather,
I went to Eastern Michigan University (for Marketing)
Hello Mark,
I don’t have any specific questions for you yet. I am sure I will when we get to that section of the course. I have a lot to learn about your areas of expertise.
Adele´s last blog ..Hexagram Ten – Nine in the Last Place
Hello Adele,
We’ll be talking about Facebook (1 week) and Twitter (the second week) and how you can use them to build your business.
If you have any questions about groups, pages, how to build word of mouth marketing or any thoughts about either platform just let me know!
Talk soon,
Carter
Hi Mark, thank you for adding your expertise to our course material!
I am not currently using my blog in a commercial fashion. At this point in time, I could have left that at I’m not using my blog, as I am stuck for an identity. It was originally started just to have a place up to return the favor of some friends who allowed me to look over their photographs and/or artwork. However, if I can find some means of evolving into a commercial endeavor with it I’ll need to do that. Starting with moving my blog.
I’m quite far behind the class, currently working on the first week.
I don’t believe I know enough to ask a sensible question at this point. I’m a frozen blogger, a nearly non-posting Tweeter and a deer-in-the-headlights Facebook registrant. It seems like everything you get approached with on Facebook requires releasing your information and that of your contacts, which gives me pause. At first blush, it doesn’t seem as though a personal Facebook account is any place to start being business-like, but as I haven’t a business I didn’t follow the link for business pages.
I’m glad that you are teaching about Facebook and Twitter. Maybe after these weeks I can start using them, heh. I have been following Bean’s Wine and Beer posts on Twitter to watch how she has tended her specific-interest social media identity. Interesting to watch it develop.
I’ll be on the lookout for a q or three to ask.
Thanks,
pete s.

Mark:
Still waiting for answers to my questions. It’s unclear that you have any experience at all? We still don’t know where you went to college (if you actually even did) and have no trackable work history.
Just because you manage groups, doesn’t make you an expert. Friending a bunch of people from someone elses group isn’t a mind bending strategy and it doesn’t take rocket science to get people to parties.
Everything you seem to be talking about can be easily looked-up in articles and not a product of your experience. Please give us more to go on than you have. If you are an “expert” I’d like to hear more about it.
Hello Heather,
Sounds like you have a lot of questions. Most have been answered already.
The groups I run are also functional organizations (www.NetworkingForACause.org http://www.nyea.org http://www.TweetNetworking.com http://www.ThriveTime.com) that function in multiple states.
As far as college goes: I answered that too – but with regards to social media college is irrelevant when you graduated 10 years ago – social media in it’s form today didn’t exist.
Not sure what you meant by “no trackable history”; everything in my bio is listed, including client’s and organization’s names.
If you have further questions let me know, seems like you’re upset about something.
Thanks,
Carter

Not trackable means you made all of the jobs up yourself. No way to check to see if you are telling the truth. Not angry, just frustrates when people make up a background and try to be credible. You seem very small time and insignificant to me. If people want to listen to that it’s their bad.
