New Course Highlights

*Abstract Painting*

This class is for people that want to learn how to “think” abstract. If you’re like me, I look at a blank canvas and have no idea where to start to make an abstract, but you really really want to be able to create one. This class will kick your creative juices into high gear and give you ideas and techniques that will enable you to think, envision and create abstractly.

This is probably the most lenient class you will ever take. Abstraction has very few rules and is perhaps the freest expression of art there is. In this vein, you are allowed to use anything you want to make your pieces. You can use paint, ink, crayons, markers, colored pencils, but it would be best if you used something that will allow you to create color in your images. The only thing is no matter what media you decide on, you must know how to use that media, as this class only teaches technique, not use of any particular media.

Visit our Graphic Design & Art Campus to learn more.

*Introduction to Astronomy*

A descriptive class (no math required) on astronomy covering history of astronomy, observational astronomy, and composition of our solar system, galaxy, and universe. First, you will learn about the history of astronomy and learn about how to view objects in the night sky. Next, you will learn about the formation and evolution of our solar system, including the composition and positions of the planets, moons, and the Sun. You will also learn about stars including their evolution and life cycle, properties and the formation of black holes. We will move onto galaxies and explore our own galaxy including the galaxies nearest to our own, progressing onto classifications of galaxies and interstellar medium. The universe as a whole will be examined by discussing the origins, expansion, theories of everything, and its fate. Finally, we will discuss the possibility of extraterrestrial life and what scientists are currently doing to search for life elsewhere. Visit our Art & Humanities Campus to learn more.

*The Art of Collage with Corel PainterX*

Collage is a wonderful way to display images and add objects that we call embellishments.

The word Collage stems from the French word coller which means to stick or glue visual objects to a central backing. Two dimensional collage is usually created with photographs, ribbons and pieces of newspapers, magazines and materials by using photography or scanning. You can use just about anything! It is only limited by your imagination!

Collage most often carries a theme whether it be a portrait of someone or a particular scene you wish to show off with added items that bring together a unique piece of art. Painting with Painter Brushe, applying textures and effects to enhance the images brings a result of a lovely creative image.

Not just images, objects and painting are applied. The effective use of Masks, Composite Methods and Effects that are available within Painter and of course not limited to outside effects.

Some may say that Collage is similar to Scrapbooking and in a small way it is. The similarity is adding images and objects to a background.

This is a six week course where you will begin with simple assemblages, leading up to week six when you create a portrait of yourself or a loved one. Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*CoffeeCup Software*

CoffeeCup Software was started inside a real coffeehouse in the early summer of 1996. Back then, good software to create cool Websites was really hard to find.” Since 1996, CoffeeCup Software has been making easy-to-use software. If you’re just getting started or if you already have a Website, their suite of web design and web site enhancing software will have you up and running a snazzy site in no time.

CoffeeCup Software is shareware, which means if you don’t already own it, you can download it and try it without having to pay for it. This gives you an opportunity to see if you like the program before you buy it. You can download all of the software we’re going to be learning here: CoffeeCup Software. Visit our Web Development Campus to learn more.

*Corel Painter X: Introduction to Brushes I **Revised***

Introduction to Corel Painter Brushes I is the first class of a two-part course. The class has to be divided into two due to the enormous amount of information contained in Painter’s Brushes. To help newer ones discovering Painter, the class is written with the beginner in mind.

Corel’s PainterX is the leading digital painting application software. Painter’s Brush tools offer a wide range of preset painting and drawing tools called Brush Variants. These Variants are organized into Categories, like, Airbrushes, Oils, Calligraphy, Pencils, so on and so forth.

Painter Brushes are designed with real media in mind. For example: you can select a Variable Flat variant from the Oils Category from the Brush Selector bar, and your brush will react just like an oil brush on traditional canvas. The Brush Selector bar lets you can have quick access to all Brush Categories and Variants at your fingertips, beautiful Pastels, Digital Watercolour, Oils.

One of PainterX’s great features is the creation of the RealBristle Brush with its Variants that produce a natural movement of an artist’s brush. This feature heightens the responsiveness of your brush in a totally new way. You can replicate the sensation and interaction between paint, canvas and brush. There’s no other program that can let you experience this. RealBristle brushes are featured in Class II. It is a requirement that you take Class I before commencing with Class II. Visit our Graphics Programs Campus to learn more.

*Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 – Intro*

This course provides a solid introduction to working with Paint Shop Pro Photo X2. The course will begin with the basics including workspacelayout, toolbars, palettes and then move on to imaging fundamentals. The focus of the class is to get you comfortable enough with the basics to continue learning some of the more advanced features of Paint Shop Pro Photo X2. (The class does NOT cover any of the new features in the Ulimate Version)

Learn to use some of the newest tools such as the unique makeover tools which let you whiten teeth, remove blemishes and paint on a tan. This course is a sure bet for the beginner and will get your started on making the most of your photos before you post them online. Visit our Graphics Programs Campus to learn more.

*Joomla! Fast Track*

LVS Online Classes Inspires Kat

February 2nd, 2009 lvs

Some people are inspired to do grand and glorious things – travel around the world, amass mega-millions of money, devote their lives to stamping out poverty, achieve their notorious “15 minutes of fame”.

Me – I’ll admit I enjoy going to new places, earning more money, helping people have a better future, and getting some deserved recognition and attention. But I don’t need to undertake any of this on a monumental scale. Because of the inspiration and rewards I receive from my work with LVS Online, I’m able to realize my most cherished dreams, literally from the comfort of my own home.

Let me explain. . . .

Just out of high school, I attended Delta College in Bay City, Michigan, and then worked for a telephone company while raising “family number one” – three children, two boys and one girl. My duties at work included traveling to other regions of the country to be trained on new computer programs and bring that knowledge back to my company to train co-workers. I definitely enjoyed it, but the sometimes conflicting demands of work and motherhood took their toll.

After divorce and remarriage, I resigned my full-time job of 20 years to be a stay-at-home Mom for my youngest, fourth child. Besides mid-life motherhood, another big factor prompting my “early retirement” was my dream of having my own home-based business. With my ongoing passion for continued learning and computer training, my plan was to develop my own web design company.

So, in 1998 with my new Hewlett Packard and dial up Internet service in hand, I searched for online classes. I found a suitable online learning institution and started my training. I also met a lot of people – online that is. I quickly learned that being a SAHM was pretty cool – not only was I able to be at home with my then four-year-old son, I also got to meet and interact with new people all over the world!

Little did I know, that this would be the beginning of LVS for me. I met Vikki at this online learning institution while taking some of the same classes and we became good friends. From her helping me to learn such things as how to develop web pages to using Paint Shop Pro, I knew Vikki was a pretty smart cookie. Eventually, with all of the vast computer knowledge Vikki had, she finally decided to spread her wings and develop her own online school – hence LVS Online Classes was founded in 1999.

But, let me back up to what actually prompted the birth of LVS Online Classes.

First, let me say that at this time I was 40-something and had gone through elementary school, high school, and college without ever getting into trouble (well, nothing to speak of). Then, it came about that one of our favorite instructors at this other online school did not see eye-to-eye with the owner of that school on a certain issue. Many of us felt that this instructor was being treated unfairly, so we stood by her. Things got a little heated, but we persisted, until, much to our surprise – Vikki and I along with about 30 other students were expelled!

Ha – can you imagine grandmothers and grandfathers who would never even be caught jaywalking, nor ever had been in a lick of trouble at school, but suddenly found themselves expelled from an online school for standing by an admired instructor? I was mortified – where would I find another online school that offered the classes I needed at an affordable cost? Not to worry – Vikki came to my rescue (as well as the other 30-some expelled students). She decided to start her own online school – LVS Online Classes. LVS stands for Leader in Virtual Studies and its tagline is “Where Learning is Fun!” – and it really is. Don’t take my word for it – read the comments from our students to hear what they have to say about LVS Online Classes.

Due to this memorable phrase that sums up the tone and premise of our new school, it grew by leaps and bounds. Vikki soon realized she needed help…so the tables turned, and now I came to her rescue to help administer the LVS Online Classes website and assist behind the scenes. I found the work to be challenging and I learned a lot along the way; I enjoy what I do and find it very rewarding. I learned more than I ever thought I would need to know by partnering with Vikki and Bob to assist with the LVS site.

Thankfully, my computer work allows a lot of flexibility. . . wherever there’s a computer and internet connection, I can go to work! That’s important to me because last year, within a six-month time frame, I became “Grammy” to three brand-new grandchildren. My three new grandbabies
Along with my first granddaughter , a step-grandson, and my now 14 year old son these six little people consume much of my time, attention and love. Being able to telecommute from anywhere in the world is also a real plus since I often accompany my husband on long-distance road trips in his work as a trucking owner/operator . When I have a few spare moments at home, you’ll find me working in my flower garden , or maybe just sitting on the deck eating chocolate and watching the geese flock to my huge backyard pond . In the winter, I watch the deer gather in the field behind my pond to munch on the leftovers from the fall harvest – which I’m doing right now!

Because of LVS, Vikki and Bob are some of our closest friends – for the past several summers they have come to Michigan with their RV and set up camp for 2 or 3 weeks (and with laptop in hand to do LVS work of course). Vikki’s children and grandchildren from Canada meet up with us and stay for several days as well.

On a few occasions, we visited Vikki and Bob at their house in Georgia. Sometimes we would stop on our way down to Florida – which is how our newest family member came about – "Bud". He was a stray that Vikki took in and was trying to find a home for him. My husband and Bud took to each other immediately – and Bud has been with us ever since.

I have also had the pleasure of meeting a few other LVS people (instructors and students) – Katz, Carol, Farron, Becky, and Sonja – which if it hadn’t been for LVS, I would never have had that honor. I plan to meet a lot more LVS people in the upcoming years!

Not only does LVS Online Classes provide a challenging, rewarding, and fulfilling business aspect in my life, but it enables me to enjoy time with my children, grandchildren, friends and family, go on road trips with my husband, and enjoy summer days on the comfort of my own deck watching the hummingbirds feed.

My association with LVS Online is definitely the source of much inspiration. . . .to work and continue to learn; to meet new people and experience new challenges; to remember that standing up for what’s right always pays off in the end; to live each day to its fullest; and, finally, to stop and smell the roses! (Or the platter size hibiscus that grows in my backyard in the summer)
