*Creating a Drupal Blog*

Drupal is a free and open source Content Management System written in PHP. With Drupal you can create a simple personal homepage, a company website, a blog, an ecommerce site, etc. Hundreds of modules are available for use with Drupal. You can create slide shows, events calendars, a contact form, product catalogs, polls or surveys, guestbook, a forum or blog, or newsletter signup. The possibilities are endless. Basically, there are no limits with Drupal, you really can make any type of website you want. No programming skills are required!

This online course is designed to take you through the development of your own Drupal web site. We will be doing a personal blog on whatever “G” rated subject that you choose. What is a weblog? A weblog, or “blog”, is a personal journal on the Web. Some modules that can be used for this type of site include a slide show, events calendar, and a guest book. Weblogs cover many different topics. Your blog can be used to share information with relatives and friends. It can include recipes, graduation announcements, birthdays, or vacation pictures. Basically anything that you are interested in can be shared with others on your blog. You can allow others to post comments on your blog. The sky s the limit!!

This class is for anyone that is interested in creating a personal web site or blog. This class will teach you the basics of the Drupal Content Management System.

*Flash ActionScript 3.0*

Currently ActionScript 3.0 is the internal programming language of Flash, Flex and Adobe AIR. This object oriented language is more adherent to the ECMA-262 standard which many other languages (i.e. JavaScript) follow.

This class gives non-programmers a chance to really understand the benefits of using a programming language in an animation tool like Adobe Flash. Students will learn the basics of the core language of ActionScript 3.0, how it is used within the timeline, interact with objects (movieclips) on the stage and library, develop simple animations with just ActionScript and understand the importance and how to create preloaders for your movies.

This beginner class on ActionScript 3.0 will give you a great foundation for creating (or understanding existing scripts) your own custom scripts.

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photography Basics III*

Photography Basic III HDR (High Dynamic Range) & Panorama Stitching online course will introduce you to the world of High Dynamic Range (HDR) images. These images can also be combined into a single panorama image and the first two weeks of this course will concentrate on how to produce a panorama image using standard JPG images. HDR will increase the dynamic range of your images. Many times our exposures will have blown out highlights and look flat and dull. HDR will help you solve this problem and reveal highlight and shadow details you never thought were possible.

Instructor Al Mierau has been an avid photographer for over 50 years. For 15 years he was professionally photographing commercial and residential structures for mortgage, fire insurance, and courtroom evidence. Air Canada, Gardens West Prairie Edition, and Heritage Canada magazines have published his photographs. Some of his work can also be seen at the Menno-Hof museum located in Shipshewana, Indiana.

New Course Highlights

*jQuery: Enhancing Web Development*

jQuery is a popular JavaScript library that simplifies web page manipulating and creation, event handling, animating, and Ajax interactions for rapid web development.

Many companies are using jQuery including: Amazon, Google, Twitter, Bank of America, BBC, ESPN, CBS News, Digg, Reuters, IBM, Netflix, Dell, Oracle, and many more.

Even casual web designers, who create web pages for fun, want to add the latest cool effects to their sites, and jQuery–the fast, flexible JavaScript library–is a tool of choice. Just as CSS separates “display” characteristics from the HTML structure, jQuery separates the “behavior” characteristics from the HTML structure.

This course will show you step-by-step how to make the most out your existing web pages using jQuery.

*Adobe Lightroom 2: Organize – Edit – Share!*

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2′s superior organizing tools make it a snap to get your photo collection under control, and you can edit photos using powerful tools like the Clarity tool, set white balance, edit exposure using the Tone Curve, and crop. You can even fix blemishes with the Spot Removal Tool and remove red eye, and use the Adjustment Brush to brush on corrections only where they are needed…all this without leaving Lightroom! You can even send photos to Photoshop or Elements for further work.

Lightroom lets you save custom settings as presets so you can apply the same settings to other photos in a snap, and supports plugins to send photos to online sites like Flickr. You can share photos with online galleries and prints. This six week course will have you organized and sharing your photos in no time!

*Photoshop 3D*

When Adobe released Photoshop CS3′s Extended version that allowed you to work with 3D models, it turned out to be a less than stellar addition to this program. It was difficult to access the tools and nothing about it was intuitive.

When they released the CS4 Extended version , they totally reworked the 3D portion of the program. As unusable and confusing as the CS3 version was, that’s how totally different the new CS4 version is. You can do so many things, including creating basic models, painting them, adding textures, adding and manipulating lights and cameras…and the list goes on.

Why did Adobe add this feature? Photoshop has always been the leader in implementing tools that fueled an artist’s creativity. Many folks believe that this addition is the next logical step in the evolution of digital design tools. Doesn’t it make sense then, thinking of it in those terms, to expand Photoshop to include this art form, since more and more people are getting involved in the 3D world? It sure does.

Per Corey Barker, National Association of Photoshop Professionals, Photoshop User CS4 Bonus Issue:

Will mastering these new 3D features make you an expert in 3D? No, but what it will do is make you more familiar with 3D in general and perhaps make learning a dedicated 3D application a little less frustrating. But what you will have is a new weapon in your design arsenal. With these few but robust 3D tools, you can create really compelling 3D art with just a little bit of practice.

This online class is geared for anyone interested in 3D and who wants to learn how to use the 3D tools in Photoshop. This course will introduce you to the basics of 3D and how to use the tools that Photoshop CS4 Extended offers.

*Photoshop Special FX*

Join me for tricks and special effects using Adobe Photoshop! We will talk about layer styles and how to create and save your own styles, and adding Actions to automate the program. We will also learn some tricks for composites and collages, text effects, and more.

Photoshop includes a folder of Goodies on the CD, and some of them are worth your time installing to the program so they are always available. There are some things here that are well worth taking the extra time to copy to the Photoshop folders. We will look at some filters on the CD that are not installed when you install Photoshop 7, CS, CS2, and CS3 by default. These filters will be used in the lessons.

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements 7: Basics*

This class is all new for Photoshop Elements, and will cover Photoshop Elements 7 for Windows. This is the first of a two part course and contains Lessons 1-6. It must be taken before taking the second class, Photoshop Elements 7 More Basics, which contains Lessons 7-12. You will learn the tools and interface, using the Effects palette and how to set preferences to make Elements work your way (as well as how to reset corrupted preferences). You will learn about selections and using Save for Web and much more! This class does not cover the Organizer. Because of the scope of the Organizer and the fact it is as feature-packed as a separate program, it has its own classes.

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements 7: More Basics*

This class is the second part of the Photoshop Elements 7 Basics class, and contains lessons 7-12. This class picks up where the first class, Photoshop Elements 7 Basics class (Lessons 1-6) left off. You will learn to understand and use layers effectively, use layer blend modes, use the Preset Manager, create and save custom brushes, use type and vector shapes and much more.

*PSE 6 For the Mac: Ready, Set, Go! Part 1*

There’s a new kid on the block! Mac users have an exciting version of Photoshop Elements! Photoshop Elements for Mac is packed with new features and a whole new look! The class is the first of a two part class for the Mac version of Photoshop Elements 6.0, and because this is an Overview course, it covers the interface, basic photo editing, some special effects, and the new features of the software. Every other week there will be a section called Picture Perfect that deals with editing and improving your photos, and every other week a section called Creative Corner that deals with the more artistic effects Elements is so good at, so whatever your intended use for Photoshop Elements 6, there’s something for everyone.

*PSE 6 For the Mac: Ready, Set, Go! Part 2*

There’s a new kid on the block! Mac users have an exciting version of Photoshop Elements! Photoshop Elements for Mac is packed with new features and a whole new look! *PSE: Actions & Styles & Plug-ins! Oh, My!*

Does installing actions, layer styles, and plug-ins into Photoshop Elements 6 and up have you stumped? Ever wonder what to do with that Content palette? This is the class for you! In this six week course, you will learn to install and run actions. You will learn about layer styles and how to edit the ones that come with Elements and how to install the ones you download from the internet. Third party plug-ins a mystery? Not anymore! This course also covers the creative aspects of Elements, like photo books, web galleries, and slideshows. You will also learn to make and print picture packages and contact sheets.

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements: Learn to Love Layers*

Layers are one of the most important skills you can learn in Photoshop Elements! Their understanding is essential in using the program successfully, yet they are often one of the hardest concepts for users to grasp. This class will get you going with layers: you will learn to use the layers palette, what it means to merge layers, and how to make new layers, as well as the difference between a background and layer. We will learn about transparent gifs and pngs, and how to make a simple animation using layers and PSE. You will learn to use layer masks and make collages and great Out of Bounds (OOB) effects that will have people asking you how you did that! We will be doing six weeks of hands-on projects so you work with layers and really understand how to use them and why they are so important. At the end of this course, you will wonder why you ever thought layers were hard!

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*PSE: Photo Correction – Make your Photos Pop*

This class is all new for Photoshop Elements 6 and up! Learn to correct your photos for color and exposure problems, and to use the new tools in PSE 6 and 7 for great results. Learn to convert your photos to make dramatic black and white images and use levels, color curves, and much more. We will learn many sharpening secrets and how to use the new Adjust Sharpness filter.

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*PSE: Photo Retouching and Restoration*

This class is all new for Photoshop Elements, and covers Photoshop Elements 6 and up. We’ve all got them: shoeboxes of old photos waiting for us to fix them. They have cracks, they’re faded, they have mildew…in this six week course in photo restoration you will learn to fix all that and more, as well as get scanning tips for textured photos and learn to work with delicate tintypes. Join me to explore using new and old tools to learn to fix damaged photos and make them look their best. This class will get your started on your restoration journey!

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements: Pizzazz*

With so many third party filters available for Photoshop Elements, people tend to forget about the ones native to the software. Native filters are the ones you will find under the Filters menu. These filters can produce some dramatic effects whether used alone or combined with others, how to use these filters is the focus of this course.. One more problem is often these filters aren’t very intuitive, so even if you have noticed them, or even experimented with them, you may not know what the sliders and settings mean, or when you might want to use a particular effect. Over the six weekly lessons, we will cover quite a few of these filters to enhance photographs, create paintings and make your text stand off the page. I believe in learning by doing so we’ll be creating images as we go to learn more about these filters. Lessons will include making paintings from filters, beveling text and adding texture to photographs using the Lighting Effects filter, using the Texturizer and Displace filter, using the 3D Transform Filter, and much more.

Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements: Using the Organizer*

The goal of this class is to unravel some of the mystery surrounding the Organizer and relieving some of the apprehension people feel about letting it handle their photo collection. The Organizer that was introduced in Elements 3 was just the beginning of the powerhouse addition to This class is all new for Photoshop Elements we see now in Elements 6 and up.

The Organizer is more than a way to organize your photos; it is almost a program in itself, working alongside the Elements Editor providing features that were handled by the Editor in older versions of Elements, such as creating photo layouts, contact sheets, batch processing, PDF Slideshows, and HTML Web Galleries. The Organizer doesn’t stop with taking over many of the tasks that used to be taken care of in the Editor; it goes much further, adding DVD and CD labels and jackets, HTML email, creating professionally printed photo books, ordering prints of your photos online, and much more. For all its ease of use, as well as its power and abilities, the Organizer is one of the most misunderstood pieces of software Adobe ever created. Hopefully at the end of this six weeks, the Organizer will no longer be a mystery to you and you’ll feel confident using it in your workflow as you edit your photos and make unique photo creations!

This class covers the organizational aspects of the Organizer only. You will learn to import and catalog your photos, using tags, and albums as well as version sets and stacks. You will learn the different viewing methods and how to set properties and ratings for your photos. You will learn to understand and set Organizer preferences, and how to manage your photo and media collection with ease, even if it is huge!

*Twitter for Business and Pleasure*

What is all the buzz about Twitter? Once perceived as simply a toy of the self absorbed, Twitter has evolved into a powerful news, networking and promotional tool. Millions of people world-wide use twitter to share news, information, pictures, video, events, and more. Yes, there are a fair number of celebrities making fools out of themselves on Twitter and others that tweet about the cute guy they saw at the mall, but Twitter is also a powerful means of getting things done online. I can’t even begin to count how many times Twitter has helped plan meals, choose restaurants, deal with air travel, find items and gotten me great deals on the things I want and need. Twitter has become a powerful customer service tool allowing businesses to quickly address problems and provide solutions. Twitter is undeniably a source to be reckoned with when it comes to the news, the Hudson River plane crash was first reported on Twitter.

This course is designed to help you separate the hype from the substance of Twitter so you can utilize its power effectively. It doesn’t matter if you have never heard of Twitter before or if you have a 6 month old twitter account that you don’t quite know what to do with. Twitter for Business and Pleasure will help you utilize Twitter to meet your unique needs.

An RDBMS is a database management system that is used today in every type of desktop or web-based application. Microsoft provides T-SQL (Transact SQL) as a dialect of, or extension to, SQL in Microsoft SQL Server, its RDBMS.

Microsoft SQL Server is one of the most popular RDBMS used today and a solid understanding of T-SQL is critical if you want to have a successful career in Microsoft application development (desktop or web).

*Corel Painter: The Art of Collage [revised]*

Collage classes are written for Corel® Painter X and 11, however if you have an older version of Painter by all means participate.

Collage is a very rewarding and creative way of making art. This six week course will begin with a simple collage. Each week you will learn how to apply different techniques and methods. The final week you will create a portrait, whether of yourself or a loved one.

The word Collage stems from the French word coller which means to stick or glue visual objects to a central backing. Two dimensional collage is usually created with photographs, ribbons and pieces of newspapers, magazines and materials by using photography or scanning. You can use just about anything! It is only limited by your imagination!
