*Drupal Basics II [new for Drupal 7] *

Drupal offers two important tools that can be used to personalize your site. Custom Content types allow you to add custom fields to existing content types and create your own content types. Views can be used to generate reports, create summaries, and other content. With the combination of these two tools, amazing things can be done on your site. The possibilities are endless. In this class we will explore Custom content types, View, and other modules that can be used to personalize your site. We will learn about the Administration tools that are available in Drupal and how to use them.

Hundreds of modules are available for use with Drupal. You can create events calendars, a contact form, product catalogs, polls or surveys, guestbook, a forum, or newsletter signup. This should be a really fun way to learn how to use some very important contributed modules that have lots of different uses.

These lessons will take you step by step through the development of your photo site. You should have previous experience with Drupal by taking the first two Drupal Basics class where we built a site/blog or by having similar experience with creating content, links, menus, blocks, taxonomy, setting up users, user roles, permissions, comments, selecting themes, using views, creating custom content types, and enabling modules. If you have not done a majority of these things, you may want to consider taking the other Drupal Basics classes first, then taking this class.

You may have already done some online photo sharing on different sites on the web. The first photo sharing sites originated during the mid to late 1990s primarily from services providing online ordering of prints, but many more came into being during the early 2000s with the goal of providing permanent and centralized access to a user’s photos.

There are many more ways you can use this type of site. Have you thought about different uses for a photo site? Here are just a few ideas:

  • SCRAPBOOKING
  • HOBBIES

New Course Highlights

*Corel Painter 12 Get up to Speed*

The newest version of Corel® Painter™ was released in May 2011. If you have recently upgraded, or are thinking of doing so, you are in for many exciting surprises. There have been so many changes made to Corel® Painter™ 12, it’s almost like a brand new program. The entire interface has changed to a more modern and streamlined look, and there are new and easier ways to customize the program and the workspaces. However, some of the changes may prove to be a bit confusing. The Palettes are now called Panels, the icons are different, menu items have been moved, and there are some new and strange looking items on the Toolbox too.

Come along with me while we explore this new program together, and discover many of the exciting feature additions provided in this version. This class has been designed especially for those who are currently using earlier versions of Painter, particularly Corel® Painter™ 11. Reading the lessons and following the various exercises will help you to transition to this latest version of Corel® Painter™. Each week you will create a new image in an exercise designed to help you more fully understand the new features in this most current version of the premier painting program. Visit our Graphics Program Campus to learn more.

*Corel Painter 12 New Horizons Part 1*

Corel® Painter™ 12 is a brand new, modernized, and very different version of Corel® Painter™. This latest version of the premier digital painting program has gotten an exciting face lift. In addition to the streamlined interface, there are new and better ways to customize the program to your individual taste, new features, new brushes (as usual) and much, much, more. This class is the first part of a beginner’s level course aimed at the Painter novice. The lessons will cover the most commonly used features of Corel® Painter™ 12, and students will learn how to use and customize many of this program’s unique tools and features.

Please note that this is a class especially written for Corel® Painter™ novices. If you have prior experience with Corel® Painter™ IX.5, Corel® Painter™ X, or Corel® Painter™ 11, please check the Course Catalog for my Corel® Painter™ 12 “Get Up to Speed” class. Visit our Graphics Program to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements 9: Make Your Photos POP!*

This intermediate class focuses on photo correction using Photoshop Elements 9. Learn to correct your photos for color and exposure problems! This class goes above and beyond the skills in the beginning series of classes, Photoshop Elements 9: The Journey Begins.

Learn to convert your photos to make dramatic black and white images and use levels, color curves, and much more! Learn many sharpening secrets.

If your goal is to improve your photos, Photoshop Elements 9: Make your Photos POP! class for you. Please note that this is NOT a photography class. It is an application class, designed to teach you how to use the tools in Photoshop Elements to improve your photos. Visit our Graphics Programs Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements 9: Pizzazz!*

With so many third party filters available for Photoshop Elements, people tend to forget about the ones native to the software. Native filters are the ones you will find under the Filters menu. These filters can produce some dramatic effects whether used alone or combined with others, how to use these filters is the focus of this course.

One more problem is often these filters aren’t very intuitive, so even if you have noticed them, or even experimented with them, you may not know what the sliders and settings mean, or when you might want to use a particular effect.

Over five lessons we will cover quite a few of these filters to enhance photographs, create paintings and make your text stand off the page. I believe in learning by doing so we’ll be creating images as we go to learn more about these filters. Visit our Graphics Programs Campus to learn more.

In the first installment of this four-course Photoshop Elements 9 road trip, we packed our bags full of the basics of the program. On the second leg of the journey, we got on the road, finishing the basics and getting into the real meat of the program. In the third installment of this four-class course, we made a pit stop and learned some great editing tools! Now, in the fourth part of the journey, you have arrived! We’ll be learning fun extras to take your use of Elements over and above the beginner level.

Photoshop Elements 9: The Journey Begins is the fourth part of the Photoshop Elements 9 Basics classes, which covers both the Windows and Mac versions of Photoshop Elements 9., You must have completed Parts 1 – 3 to take this class. This online class builds on what was learned in the first three courses, and picks up where the third class left off. Visit our Graphics Program Campus to learn more.

*PHP Web Designs I*

PHP is a server-side scripting language that’s designed specifically for building web sites. You create pages with PHP and HTML. When a visitor opens the page, the server processes the PHP commands and then sends the results to the visitor’s browser. Learning PHP can open up new possibilities for your web site. Interactive features can be added to your web site including guest books, message boards, forms, surveys, and shopping carts. In this class you will learn the basics of PHP including syntax, variables, operators, loops, conditional statements, arrays, and functions. We will use a lot of simple basic examples that will demonstrate the concepts you need to master in order to write more advanced scripts later.

PHP is free to download and use, which is one reason why it is so popular. You’ll find that the vast majority of Web hosting accounts supports PHP. While many programming languages can be used to build Web applications, PHP is one of the few languages specifically designed for the Web. For this reason, it includes a lot of useful Web-related features including:

  • Easy ways to read and handle Web forms and cookies
  • Functions for creating and manipulating graphics
  • The ability to talk to popular databases such as MySQL
  • Functions for working with HTML.

This class is for anyone that is interested in learning the basics of PHP and how to use it in your web pages for interactivity, form validation, and really cool effects. Visit our Web Programming to learn more.

*WordPress Basics*

WordPress is a free, Web-based software program that anyone can use to build and maintain a website or blog. It began in 2003 as a simple open source blogging tool and was originally intended as an easy way to set up a blog. But, thanks to the efforts of a large “open source” community of WordPress programmers working to extend and improve its capabilities, WordPress has become much more than just a tool for bloggers. Today’s WordPress is really a “content management system” (CMS), which means that it can be used to run full-sized, social media-rich business websites or small, personal web sites.

This online course is designed to take you through the development of your own WordPress site. We will be doing a site on whatever “G” rated subject that you choose or you can use the material provided to make a Garden Club website/blog.

What is a weblog? A weblog, or “blog”, is a personal journal on the Web. Weblogs cover many different topics. Your blog can be used to share information with relatives and friends. It can include recipes, graduation announcements, birthdays, or club news. Basically anything that you are interested in can be shared with others on your blog. You can allow others to post comments on your blog. The sky’s the limit!!

This class is for anyone that is interested in creating a personal, club, or group website and/or blog using WordPress. This class will teach you the basics of WordPress. Visit our Blogging Campus to learn more.

*Introduction to WordPress Themes*

WordPress is best known as a blogging platform but in the past year it is gaining popularity as a content management system (CMS). Web sites based on CMS are extremely easy to update and maintain. Adding or changing the content of these web sites is a simple as filling out a form. This simplicity makes a CMS based website, like those based in WordPress, an ideal choice for:

  • people who don’t have a lot of technical expertise
  • organizations with a rotating leadership like school groups, associations and non-profits

Although a very basic WordPress installation is easy to complete, it is very basic. A basic WordPress installation is not going to be sufficient for a professional presence. WordPress is very flexible and powerful -once you understand how to customize it with themes. The content of a WordPress web site comes from a database, it is the theme that displays that information for your readers.
In this introduction course to WordPress themes, we will work on modifying the default WordPress theme to reflect the branding of your group or business. Here are some examples of what you can do to make your theme truly your own.

  • Incorporate your branding colors and logo
  • Take control over how tall your header is
  • Incorporate slideshows into your theme
  • Want a left side bar, a right side bar or none
  • Create a custom footer

Best of all you can do these customizations if you understand HTML and CSS. More in-depth customization requires PHP and best achieved working with a theme framework. In the Intermediate WordPress themes we will work with a theme framework. Visit our Web Development Campus to learn more.

New Course Highlights

*Build Your Web Site II – More XHTML & CSS – Part B*

The Build Your Website II – Part B online class builds on what you learned in the Build Your Website II – Part A online class. In this Part B of the intermediate class, separating presentation from structure will continue to be important and external style sheets will be used. The importance of validating your pages will be stressed. Another very important concept in web design will be introduced: Server Side Includes. Server Side Includes (SSI) were first developed to allow Web developers to “include” HTML documents inside other pages. You can you can use SSI to write your website content once and use it in multiple locations. Using server side includes is very easy and can make it much easier and quicker to update your pages.

We will construct a template that uses server side includes that you can use for multiple web sites. We will also go into more detail on the following subjects: form validation, style sheets, and advanced table design. We will also learn about floating and video embedding. Visit our Web Development Campus to learn more.

*Build Your Web Site II – More XHTML & CSS – Part C*

The Build Your Website II – Part C online class builds on what you learned in the Build Your Website II – Part B online class. In this third part of the intermediate class, separating presentation from structure will continue to be important and external style sheets will be used. The importance of validating your pages will be stressed. Some very important concepts in web design will be introduced: PHP Includes and iFrames. If you want the same content copied over multiple pages of your site, with HTML you’ll need to manually copy and paste that content. But if you have PHP on your server you can write one file and then include it on your Web pages where you need it. We will construct a template that uses PHP Includes that you can use for multiple web sites. You do not need to know any PHP before taking this class. Any PHP that is needed will be supplied in the lessons.

We will also learn about fixed positioning and iFrames. With iFrames you can include pieces of code into a web page without any server scripts. The follow picture shows a web photo album that was created with iFrames. Visit our Web Development Campus to learn more.

*Organize Your Life*

Can you find anything in your home or office in 5 minutes or less? If you can, you are definitely on the organized track and likely are taking this course to fine tune your skills and get some new ideas to make your life more streamlined.

Many others, however, struggle to find papers, bills, glasses, keys and a myriad of other items. Many of us have things in our homes, in our closets, on our desks that have not been used in the past 12 months. Of all our belongings, we use 20% of them 80% of the time! Can we consider during this course to let go of some of the 80% of the stuff that we seldom if ever use? This 80% adds substantially to the disorganization in our lives. This 20/80 formula can be applied to the papers in our homes, the files in our drawers, the gadgets in our kitchens, and the clothes in our closets. If we follow this line of thinking further, then we can extrapolate from that that approximately 50% of the items we are storing in our homes are merely clutter!

So many of us are like the majority of the people in North America over run with stuff and struggling to find enough time in our days to manage our schedules and get our tasks completed! Visit our Arts & Humanities to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements 9: The Journey Begins, Part 1*

This class is all new for Photoshop Elements 9 for Windows and Mac. This is the first of a two part course. You will learn the tools and interface, using the Effects palette and how to set preferences to make Elements work your way (as well as how to reset corrupted preferences). You will learn about selections and using Save for Web and much more!

This class does not cover the Organizer because of the scope of the Organizer and the fact it is as feature-packed as a separate program, it would fill the whole class. Visit our Graphic Programs to learn more.

*Build Your Web Site II – More XHTML & CSS – Part A*

This online class builds on what you learned in Build Your Website I online class. In this first part of the intermediate class, you will learn a very important concept in web design: separating presentation from structure. This separation is important in the design process. It allows you to change your content without affecting the look of the site. You can add pages to your site without the need to style those pages. A big advantage comes when you want to change a design element on your site. Instead of changing it on every page, you only need to change it in one file and all your pages will be affected by that change. In this class, you will increase your CSS skills while working with lists, creating fancy forms, creating a tableless layout with a header and footer, designing delightful menus, and many other things. Visit our Web Development Campus to learn more.

*Drupal Basics II*

This online class will teach you the basics of these very important Drupal modules: the Content Construction Kit, Views, and Panels. The Content Construction Kit allows you to add custom fields to existing content types and create your own content types. Views can be used to generate reports, create summaries, and display collections of images and other content. With Panels you can create customized layouts for your pages and views, even your home page.

In this online course we will use these modules and a few others to create a photo site. This should be a really fun way to learn how to use some very important contributed modules that have lots of different uses.

New Course Highlights

*Drupal Themes*

Drupal is a free and open source Content Management System written in PHP. With Drupal you can create a simple personal homepage, a company website, a blog, an ecommerce site, etc. Themes play a key role in the Drupal system. The theme is the most significant piece of your Drupal installation. It is responsible for your visitor’s first impression of the site.

This online course is designed to take you through the development of your own Drupal themes. You will be setting up your own design environment on your personal computers. We will examine the Drupal System and the files that make up a Drupal theme. You will learn how to make a subtheme of an original theme, use a starter theme and style it to suit your needs, and build your own theme from scratch.

When you finish this course you will be able to use your design environment for future projects and have a few new themes that you have designed for use on your website. Visit our Web Related Campus to learn more.

*Introduction to Computer Graphics: Starting with GIMP*

This class is all about images that you see, create and use in various ways on your computer. Whether you are retouching photos for the family, creating artwork for the web, or doing fine art professionally, this class will be a good starting point to working with images on the computer. We’ll start out with some very simple exercises and grow from there. By the end of the class, you should be able to create simple images in the GIMP program (and maybe not so simple!) You should also be able to import images into the program. You will also be able to manipulate images to be able to use them in various ways and you’ll know why certain manipulations are needed for various tasks. Along the way, you’ll try out some of the cool things you can do with the GIMP. Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Corel Painter: PhotoPainting & Portraiture II*

PhotoPainting & Portraiture II covers more landscape painting but introduces painting of animals and birds. You will have the opportunity of painting your very own favorite pooch or kitty, or other favorite animal.

Each week you are given an image as you did in PhotoPainting & Portraiture I and step by step instruction is given on how to transform a photograph into a lovely painterly image. You are then requested to paint your own.

Create your own hairy brush; learn what brushes are great for feather painting and make a nice brush for snow, although I have provided brushes for this. In PhotoPainting & Portraiture II there are some video demonstrations, so look out for that information in the lesson. Visit our Graphics Program Campus to learn more.

*PSE 8 Beyond the Basics: High Seas*

We have Set Sail, we’ve had Clear Sailing, and now I will take you on the High Seas in this third class of the series of courses specifically for Photoshop Elements 8! This class will cover more advanced features of Photoshop Elements 8, such as installing and using layer styles, actions, and third party plug-ins. We will learn to replace a bad sky with a good one, work with patterns, and cover some more advanced photo correction techniques, such as using Camera Raw. We will learn to make a studio portrait from a snapshot, do a bit of digital alchemy and turn silver into gold, and much more! Visit our Graphics Programs Campus to learn more.

New Course Highlights

*Business and Management Introduction*

Introduction to Business and Management online class focuses on developing the fundamentals needed for success in the business world. This course examines the foundations for business, ethical behavior and decision making, management, operations, and global business. The student will also learn about human resources, managerial styles, and improving employee motivation. After completion of this course, students will understand key components of business and management. Visit our Business Campus to learn more.

*Corel Painter PhotoPainting & Portraiture I*

I have heard people say “I can’t paint, not even a straight line”. The great news is Corel has provided the Painter Software that will enable the most amateur artist to paint beautiful, painterly masterpieces. I’m delighted to help you learn this. However, like all painting and drawing, it does require lots of patience and practise. Once you’ve been bitten by the PhotoPainting bug you won’t want to stop!

This course is the first of three in PhotoPainting & Portraiture. You start with the basics; a simple clone then on to painting Still Life, Landscapes and Portraits by making application of Painter’s brushes, textures and other applications and much more.

Each week you are given an image and step by step instruction to transform a photograph into a lovely, painterly image. You are then requested to paint your own. Do not feel daunted by this. Once you have painted a few photographs, it will be more or less … easier! Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Flash CS4 Introduction*

Since its introduction in 1996, Flash has become a popular method for adding animation and interactivity to web pages. Flash is commonly used to create animation, advertisements, and various web page Flash components, to integrate video into web pages, and more recently, to develop rich Internet applications.

This 6 week Intro course focuses on learning the interface, tools, and basic features of Flash. You will create animated logos, buttons, and simple movies to brighten up your web site.

Flash gives web developers the ability to create interactive, animated web sites. Before Flash appeared on the scene, creating animated web sites (especially with sound) involved using large, multiple files. This requires high bandwidth that the general public does not have. Flash files, in contrast, can be very small, so bandwidth is less of a concern. Flash also brings a level of advanced animation and interactivity previously unavailable using traditional Internet technology. Visit our Web Related Campus to learn more.

*Personal Finance*

This is a course that teaches you the core basics of managing your personal finances. It is very important, especially in the recent economy, to have an understanding of how to manage assets and budget properly. This course addresses problems in personal finance including financial planning, personal investing, budgeting, financing ,and credit management. Visit our Business Campus to learn more.

*Photoshop Elements 8 Basics II: Clear Sailing*

This class is the second part of the Photoshop Elements 8 Basics class, and contains lessons 7-12. This class picks up where the first class, Photoshop Elements 8 Basics (Lessons 1-6) left off. You will learn to understand and use layers effectively, use layer blend modes, use the Preset Manager, create and save custom brushes, use type and vector shapes and much more. Visit our Graphic Programs Campus to learn more.

*Podcasting Intro*

Podcasting is an exciting technology that has become very popular on the web and in the media. New services for listening to and creating podcasts are constantly popping up. This industry is seeing very exciting growth. Since podcasting became popular in the fall of 2004, thousands of shows have been created. So why is podcasting so great? You can listen to what you want, when you want, and how you want. Anyone can create a podcast. All you need is a computer, a microphone, speakers, and the Internet. Podcasting takes very little time and very little cost.

People will pay money for valuable information. You can listen to audio podcasts on anything that plays MP3s. This online course will take you through the basics of finding podcasts on the web, software and hardware for podcasting, listening to podcasts, writing podcasts, recording podcasts, and publishing your own podcasts on the web. Visit our Web Related Programs Campus to learn more.
